{Review & Giveaway} Emily Lim books (Part 1)

The first time we got our hands on Emily Lim’s award winning books was when we received the Pen Pal WHIZZ to review. Yes, her books are made compatible with the Pen Pal WHIZZ and she even wrote the scripts for characters in the book so when you tap the talking pen on the characters, they will speak! Her stories are already such a great read and with characters that actually speak? A real bonus for any reader! And with the Pen Pal WHIZZ, there are even games designed for every 2-page spread to ‘quiz’ the child after reading the text or to just get the child to pay attention to little details in the illustrations. Of the four books we received, my little girl picked The Tale of Rusty Horse to read first followed by Prince Bear and Pauper Bear. She was so hooked on these two books she refused to read any other books for at least a week! And so I thought since I’m gonna be giving all four books to my lucky fans, I’ll start with giving out these two books first followed by Just Teddy and Bunny finds the right stuff in Part 2 of my Emily Lim books giveaway.

But first, the summary and review

The Tale of Rusty Horse is a heartwarming story where a neglected and lonely rusty rocking horse longed to be a favourite again with everyone and with the help of a fairy, he got his wish when he became a real horse. But when the fairy’s magic wore off, he became himself again. It was then that he found a true friend in a little boy who couldn’t walk but they shared adventures up in the high mountains, in a rocket faraway in outer space, in a ship across the wide ocean… all in the boy’s imagination of course. When the fairy found the spell to make Rusty real forever, he made the choice – the choice that wouldn’t make his dream of being a favourite with many come true, but the one that would matter to someone else, his friend, the little boy. In the end, he chose to remain the way he was – a rusty rocking horse because he realised he “was truly happy – just to be himself”.

Not just a simple story instilling the importance of loving ourselves just the way we are, I feel that it is a wonderful story which lets children realise that we can find joy in making someone else happy.

Prince Bear & Pauper Bear is another lovely story where two very different bears experience love and friendship. Pauper Bear was named by the other toys in the shop because he was a poorly stitched bear, his eyes didn’t match and he didn’t even have a mouth because the toymaker forgot to sew him one so he couldn’t speak. In stark contrast, Prince Bear was well-stitched, had a fine little crown and often boasted how he’s perfectly stitched. Every toy’s dream of course was to be brought back by a child and loved – and that’s when their stories unfold.

Prince Bear was bought by a girl whose princess doll was ‘becoming a bore’ and was brought home to the lovely big house he had dreamed about. Pauper Bear – the ‘teddy bear nobody wants’ – was given to a little boy who came ‘with a skip and a hop’ but couldn’t afford a toy from the shop. You can of course imagine how the story goes. But there’s more to it at the end – the bears’ paths crossed one day and Pauper Bear had to make a major decision. He could choose to be selfish and keep his place as the beloved bear or save the forgotten and tattered Prince Bear from the little girl’s dog and risk being displaced. So how did Pauper Bear come to his decision?

Don’t you just love Emily Lim’s stories? I love how these two stories speak right to the kids about compassion, empathy, putting others before self and that someone will love us for being us and it doesn’t matter at all if we are not everyone’s favourite person!

These books are absolutely fabulous reads and it’s no wonder my little girl was hooked on them for a whole week! The inspiration for Prince Bear & Pauper Bear and her other three picture books is drawn from Emily’s experience and struggles of coping with a rare voice disorder (from which she has recovered).
